Winter Awning Use and Precautions

An awning doubles your living space in the colder months — but wind, rain and snow put far more strain on it than a summer breeze ever will. Used well it’s a warm, dry haven; used carelessly it’s a write-off. Here’s how to use an awning safely through autumn and winter.

Anchor it properly

Winter awnings live or die by their fixings. Add storm straps and extra tie-downs, swap flimsy pegs for heavy-duty or rock pegs, and fit additional storm poles to stiffen the frame. Check tension daily — fabric slackens as it gets wet and cold.

Respect the wind

An awning is effectively a sail. Know your limits and, when a gale is forecast, take it down rather than gamble — a failed awning can damage the van it’s attached to. It’s always cheaper to re-pitch than to repair.

Manage snow load

Snow is heavy and builds fast. Brush it off the roof before it accumulates, keep a steeper roof pitch so it sheds, and use extra roof poles for support. Never leave a laden awning overnight in heavy snow.

Beat condensation and cold

A heated, occupied awning gets damp quickly. Ventilate, run a dehumidifier, and lay an insulated awning carpet or groundsheet to cut the cold and damp rising from below — it makes the space genuinely usable.

Heat it safely

Use only awning-safe heaters, always with ventilation and a carbon-monoxide alarm, and never bring a naked-flame BBQ inside. Warmth is worth it — but never at the expense of safety.

Care and drying

Never pack an awning away wet. Dry it thoroughly before storage to prevent mould and mildew, and reproof the fabric as needed so it keeps shrugging off the rain.

Get the anchoring, ventilation and insulation right and your awning stays a warm, dry room all through the cold season.
