What size tent do I need for my family?+

A useful rule: pick 1 person more than your group. So a 4-person tent comfortably sleeps 3 with room for kit. For festivals, a 2-person works for a solo traveller; for family camps, 5–6 person tents give room for inflatable beds and a small living area.

What's the difference between an air tent and a poled tent?+

Air tents pitch by inflating tubular air beams — much faster and easier, especially solo. Poled tents use traditional aluminium or fibreglass poles. Poled is lighter to carry and tends to be cheaper; air pitches faster and is more forgiving in wind because the beams flex rather than snap.

What thickness of sleeping mat do I need?+

For summer car-camping, 2.5–5cm self-inflating mats are comfortable. For colder UK seasons, look for higher R-values (insulation rating) and 5cm+ thickness. Inflatable air beds give the most plush sleep but need a pump and lose heat faster.

Do I need a 4-season sleeping bag?+

Most UK summer camping is fine with a 2–3 season bag (comfort rated 5–10°C). If you camp in spring or autumn, go for a 3-season (0–5°C). 4-season bags are needed for winter or mountain camping and are overkill for typical UK weekends.

Are camping stoves allowed at festivals?+

Most UK festivals allow small canister gas stoves in the family camping zones but ban them in main arenas. Always check the specific festival rules — and never cook inside a tent, vestibule or awning (carbon monoxide risk).

What are the must-have camping accessories?+

Beyond the tent and sleeping kit: a head torch (for night trips to the loo), a windproof lighter or stormproof matches, a tarp or windbreak, hammers/extra tent pegs, a cool box for food, and a comfortable folding chair. After the basics, comfort items like a coffee press and lights make a huge difference.
