Summer 2026 is approaching and the camping season is about to begin. Before you pack the car for the first trip, take thirty minutes to check, clean, and test your air bed kit. A pre-season once-over prevents the single most common camping disaster: arriving at a campsite with a flat air bed and an air bed pump that does not work.
Step 1 β Inspect Your Air Bed
Pull your air bed out of storage and inflate it at home. Leave it inflated for several hours β ideally overnight. If it is noticeably softer in the morning, you have a slow puncture. Locate and repair it before the season starts. Check seams, valve seals, and the flocked surface for wear.
Step 2 β Test Your Air Mattress Pump
Plug in or charge your air mattress pump and run it. Confirm it starts promptly, reaches normal speed, and does not make unusual noises. Time the inflation and compare it to the pump's specification. If it is significantly slower, clean the intake, check the battery, and test again.
Battery Pumps
Fully charge your rechargeable air bed pump. If it has been sitting in a cupboard since September, the battery will be partially drained. A full charge-discharge-recharge cycle conditions the cells and gives you an accurate reading of remaining capacity. Vango, Outwell, and Coleman rechargeable pumps should all be put through this pre-season refresh.
12V Pumps
Test from your car's 12V socket. Check the cable for fraying, the plug for corrosion, and the fuse in your car's accessory circuit. Yellowstone and Coleman 12V models are robust, but a winter in a damp garage can corrode contacts.
Foot Pumps
Check the bellows for cracks and the hinge for stiffness. Ensure the one-way valves inside the pump still seal β a leaky valve means air escapes on the return stroke, halving the pump's effectiveness.
Step 3 β Check Your Nozzles
Lay out every nozzle adapter and match them to the valves on your air beds. Replace any that are cracked, warped, or missing. A universal adapter kit is cheap insurance and fits in a pocket.
Step 4 β Assess Whether You Need an Upgrade
If your pump is more than five years old, battery capacity will have degraded. If you have switched to a new air bed brand, valve compatibility may have changed. If the family has grown and you now need to inflate more beds, a faster pump saves time. Summer 2026 is a good moment to upgrade rather than fighting with ageing kit.
Step 5 β Pack Smart
- Store the pump, nozzles, repair kit, and charging cable in one bag
- Pack the bag where you can reach it first β you need the pump before anything else
- Bring a backup manual pump in case of battery or electrical failure
