Best Caravan Covers: Breathable vs Non-Breathable & How to Fit One

A good cover is one of the best-value things you can do for a caravan or motorhome over winter — but the wrong one does more harm than good. Here’s how to choose and fit a cover that actually protects your van.

Why cover your van at all?

Left uncovered through winter, bodywork takes a battering from UV fade, frost, acid rain, bird mess, tree sap and green algae. A cover keeps it clean, protects the finish and helps preserve resale value — you’ll notice the difference the first spring.

Breathable vs non-breathable — the key decision

This is the one that matters. A cheap non-breathable tarpaulin traps condensation against the bodywork, which leads to damp, mould and streaking. A proper breathable cover lets that moisture escape while still keeping rain out. For anything longer than a few days, always choose breathable.

Getting the right fit

Covers are sized by van length and type (caravan, motorhome or campervan), so measure before you buy. Too loose and it flaps and chafes in the wind; too tight and it tears. A zipped door panel makes it far easier to nip in and out over winter.

Protecting against chafing

The cover’s worst enemy is its own movement. Fit corner protectors and pad sharp points like the awning rail, and secure the straps snugly under the van so it can’t work loose in a gale.

Fitting it safely

Pick a calm, dry day and enlist a second pair of hands. Work front to back, use a step safely for roof access, and take your time getting it even. A well-fitted cover sits tight and quiet; a rushed one flaps itself to bits.

Full covers vs top covers

A full cover protects the whole van; a top cover shields just the roof and upper sides and is quicker to fit — a good middle ground if full coverage feels like a faff. Either beats leaving it bare.

Get a breathable cover in the right size, fit it well, and your van comes out of winter clean, dry and ready for the road.
