A well-prepared sanitation kit transforms camping from endured to enjoyed. This checklist covers everything you need to keep your portable toilet running smoothly, your hands clean and your campsite hygienic through the entire summer 2026 season. Print it, save it to your phone or pin it to the inside of your camping cupboard — then work through it before every trip.
Portable Toilet
- Portable toilet — Thetford Porta Potti, Dometic, Blue Diamond or equivalent, cleaned and inspected
- Blade-valve seal checked and lubricated with silicone seal lubricant
- Flush mechanism tested with clean water
- Flush-water tank filled and ready
- Waste tank pre-dosed with chemical and a litre of water
Chemicals and Fluids
- Waste-tank chemical — Thetford Aqua Kem Blue, Aqua Kem Green or equivalent (concentrated bottle or sachets)
- Flush-tank rinse — Thetford Aqua Rinse or equivalent (one bottle lasts many trips)
- Seal lubricant — Thetford Toilet Seal Lubricant or generic silicone-based product
- Spare chemical dose for mid-trip re-dosing if you are away for more than a weekend
Toilet Paper and Wipes
- Rapid-dissolve camping toilet paper — Thetford Aqua Soft or equivalent (2 to 4 rolls depending on trip length and group size)
- Biodegradable antibacterial wipes for daily seat and rim cleaning (do not flush — use for surface cleaning only)
- Standard toilet paper as a backup if rapid-dissolve runs out
Hygiene Supplies
- Alcohol-based hand sanitiser — one large pump bottle for next to the toilet, one small bottle for pockets
- Biodegradable hand soap and a small water container or portable wash station for thorough handwashing
- Nitrile disposable gloves — at least 4 pairs (for emptying the waste tank)
- Small bin bags for used wipes, gloves and other waste
Privacy and Shelter
- Toilet tent or privacy shelter — Kampa pop-up or pole-frame utility tent, or a similar brand (essential for tent campers without a built-in washroom)
- Pegs and guylines for the toilet tent (check they are included or pack separately)
- Curtain, screen or inner compartment if using the toilet inside an awning
Comfort and Convenience
- Non-slip mat for under the toilet — prevents sliding on smooth surfaces
- Small LED light — clip-on or battery-powered, ideally with a red mode for night-time use without disturbing others
- Waterproof mat or tray under the toilet to protect groundsheet or vehicle floor
- Spare seals (blade-valve seal and pour-spout seal) for emergency replacement
For Extended Trips and Touring
- Larger supply of chemicals — calculate doses based on trip length (see our dosing guide)
- Extra toilet paper — plan for approximately one roll per person per 3 to 4 days
- Disposal point map — download offline maps from apps like Park4Night, Campercontact or the Caravan and Motorhome Club site finder
- Padded toilet seat cover for daily comfort on trips lasting a week or more
- Dedicated cleaning cloth and spray for a mid-trip deep clean of the bowl and seat
End-of-Trip Routine
- Empty the waste tank at the nearest Chemical Disposal Point
- Rinse the waste tank twice with clean water
- Empty and rinse the flush-water tank
- Wipe the bowl, seat, lid and exterior with a damp cloth
- Leave both sections separated with caps open to air-dry before storage
- Restock any supplies that are running low for the next trip
Quick Reference: What Goes Where
-
Waste tank: blue or green chemical + 1 litre water at the start of each cycle
-
Flush tank: clean water + a capful of pink rinse fluid
-
