Essential Camping Toilet Accessories — What You Actually Need to Pack

Buying a portable camping toilet is only half the equation. The right accessories make the difference between a tolerable experience and a genuinely comfortable one. Yet many accessory lists are bloated with unnecessary items. Here is a focused, no-nonsense guide to what you actually need to pack alongside your Thetford, Dometic or Blue Diamond toilet for summer 2026.

The Essentials — Do Not Leave Without These

1. Waste Tank Chemical

A concentrated blue or green chemical fluid for the waste-holding tank is non-negotiable. It breaks down solids and controls odour. Thetford Aqua Kem Blue concentrate is the most popular choice, and a single litre bottle lasts multiple trips. Sachets and tablets are convenient alternatives that eliminate measuring.

2. Flush Tank Rinse

Pink rinse fluid added to the freshwater flush tank lubricates the bowl surface, helping waste slide away cleanly and reducing residue. Thetford Aqua Rinse is the standard product. A small capful per tank fill is sufficient. You can camp without it, but the improvement in bowl cleanliness is noticeable.

3. Rapid-Dissolve Toilet Paper

Standard household toilet paper works but dissolves slowly. Rapid-dissolve camping toilet paper — such as Thetford Aqua Soft — breaks down much faster in the waste tank, reducing the risk of blockages and making emptying smoother. Two rolls per trip is usually enough for two people over a long weekend.

4. Disposable Gloves

A box of nitrile gloves is inexpensive and essential for hygienic emptying. Keep a few pairs in your toilet kit bag. They also protect your hands when handling chemicals.

5. Hand Sanitiser

A pump bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitiser placed next to the toilet ensures everyone cleans their hands after every use. This is the single most important hygiene accessory, especially when camping with children.

Highly Recommended — Worth the Space

6. Toilet Tent or Privacy Shelter

If you are tent camping or do not have a built-in washroom, a dedicated toilet tent from Kampa or similar provides essential privacy. Pop-up shelters are quickest to deploy; pole-frame tents are more wind-stable. Either way, the toilet goes from emergency backup to a proper facility.

7. Antibacterial Wipes

Biodegradable antibacterial wipes for a quick daily wipe of the seat and rim keep the toilet hygienic and pleasant between empties. Do not put these in the waste tank — use them on the surface only and dispose of them in a bin bag.

8. Seal Lubricant

The blade-valve seal is a critical component that prevents odour leaking from the waste tank. A tube of silicone-based seal lubricant — Thetford makes a purpose-built product — applied once a season keeps the rubber supple and extends seal life. A neglected seal eventually hardens and leaks.

Nice to Have — If You Have the Room

9. Carry or Storage Bag

A padded carry bag keeps the toilet clean during transport and protects your vehicle boot from any residue. Some bags have pockets for chemicals and paper.

10. Non-Slip Mat

Placing a rubber non-slip mat under the toilet prevents it sliding on hard surfaces, particularly in a motorhome, campervan or awning with a groundsheet floor.

11. Spare Seals

If you use your toilet frequently, carrying a spare blade-valve seal means a quick replacement if the original degrades mid-trip. Thetford and Dometic seals are model-specific, so check compatibility before buying.

What You Do Not Need

  • Air fresheners or sprays: proper chemical dosing and ventilation handle odour. Masking products just mix smells unpleasantly.
  • Fancy toilet seat covers: they slip, they get dirty and they do not add meaningful comfort.
  • Multiple types of cleaning product: one pack of antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser cover all hygiene needs.
