Emptying a portable camping toilet is the task every camper wishes they could skip, yet it takes less than five minutes and modern toilet designs have made the process remarkably clean. Whether you own a Thetford Porta Potti, a Dometic portable or a Blue Diamond budget model, the steps are almost identical. Here is exactly how to do it β and how to keep everything hygienic β as you prepare for summer 2026 adventures.
What You Will Need
- Disposable gloves (nitrile recommended)
- A bottle of toilet chemical for re-dosing
- Clean water for rinsing (a small bottle or access to a tap)
- Hand sanitiser or soap and water for afterwards
Step 1 β Separate the Two Halves
Every portable chemical toilet splits into a top (flush and seat) section and a bottom (waste-holding tank) section. Release the side latches or clips β on Porta Potti models these are sturdy plastic levers β and lift the top section off. Set it aside on a clean surface.
Step 2 β Carry the Waste Tank to the Disposal Point
UK campsites, motorhome service areas and many public facilities provide Chemical Disposal Points (CDPs), also called Elsan points. These are clearly signed and consist of a drain connected to the mains sewer system. Never empty a chemical toilet into a standard public toilet, a hedge or a watercourse β this is both illegal and harmful.
The waste tank has a carry handle and a sealed pouring spout. Hold it firmly and carry it upright. Tanks holding 21 litres of waste can be heavy, so take your time.
Step 3 β Empty the Tank
- Position the pouring spout over the CDP drain.
- Open the spout cap and, if your model has one, press the pressure-release button. This vents trapped air and allows the liquid to pour smoothly without glugging.
- Tilt the tank and pour steadily. Rotate the tank to ensure all contents drain out.
- Close the spout.
Step 4 β Rinse the Tank
Pour a litre or two of clean water into the tank through the spout, swirl it around and pour it out into the CDP drain. Repeat once more if necessary. This rinse prevents residue build-up and keeps seals in good condition.
Step 5 β Re-Dose and Reassemble
With the tank clean, add the recommended dose of chemical fluid β Thetford Aqua Kem Blue or an equivalent product β along with a litre of water. Close the spout, return to your pitch and reattach the top section. Click the latches shut and your toilet is ready for use again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Overfilling the waste tank. Empty before it reaches capacity. Most models have a level indicator β use it.
-
Forgetting the pressure-release button. Skipping this step can cause the contents to splash unpredictably.
-
Using household bleach to rinse. Bleach damages seals and reacts poorly with toilet chemicals.
-
Emptying into the wrong drain. Only use designated CDPs to protect the environment and stay within the law.
Keeping It Pleasant
The thought of emptying is always worse than the reality. Quality chemicals from Thetford or Dometic break waste down into a liquid with minimal odour. A pair of gloves and a brisk walk to the disposal point is all it takes. After a couple of empties, the process becomes completely routine.
