Portable Toilet Disposal Points in the UK — Where and How to Empty

Knowing where to empty your portable camping toilet is just as important as owning one. The UK has a decent network of Chemical Disposal Points (CDPs), but their locations are not always obvious and the rules vary. This guide maps out your options and explains the correct procedure, so you can travel confidently through summer 2026 and beyond.

What Is a Chemical Disposal Point?

A Chemical Disposal Point — sometimes called an Elsan point — is a dedicated drain connected to the mains sewer system, designed to receive chemical toilet waste. The drain is typically covered with a hinged lid and located in a purpose-built service area with a tap for rinsing. The waste goes into the sewage treatment system, where the chemicals are processed safely.

Where to Find CDPs

Campsites and Caravan Parks

The vast majority of UK campsites and caravan parks have at least one CDP, usually near the service block or in a dedicated motorhome service area. It is standard practice to check for a CDP when booking — reputable sites list it among their facilities. The Camping and Caravanning Club and Caravan and Motorhome Club sites almost always have well-maintained disposal points.

Motorhome Service Points

Standalone motorhome service points are becoming more common across the UK. These are often located at fuel stations, pub car parks (with permission) and purpose-built aires-style stops. They typically offer fresh water, grey-water drainage and chemical waste disposal. Websites and apps like the Caravan and Motorhome Club's site finder, BritStops and the SearchFHS database map these locations across the country.

Certified Locations and CLs

Certificated Locations (CLs) operated by the Caravan and Motorhome Club and Certificated Sites (CSs) run by the Camping and Caravanning Club are small, privately owned sites with a maximum of five pitches. Most offer a chemical disposal point, though facilities are more basic. Check individual listings before arrival.

Public Facilities

Some council-operated public toilets and waste facilities accept chemical toilet waste, though this is less common and varies by local authority. Never empty a chemical toilet into a standard public toilet bowl, a drain in a car park or any open watercourse — this is illegal and environmentally harmful.

How to Use a CDP Correctly

  1. Wear disposable gloves.
  2. Open the CDP drain cover.
  3. Position the waste tank pouring spout over the drain opening.
  4. If your Thetford Porta Potti or Dometic tank has a pressure-release button, press it to vent air and allow a smooth pour.
  5. Pour the contents steadily into the drain. Avoid splashing.
  6. Rinse the tank with clean water from the nearby tap and pour the rinse water into the drain.
  7. Close the drain cover.
  8. Dispose of gloves in a waste bin and wash or sanitise your hands.

What NOT to Dispose Of

  • Wet wipes, nappies or sanitary products — these block drains and should go in general waste.
  • Kitchen waste or grey water — use the grey-water drain if available, not the CDP.
  • Cooking oil or fats — these cause blockages in the sewer system.

Planning Ahead on Long Trips

On a touring holiday, plan your CDP stops in advance. A 21-litre waste tank on a Porta Potti 365 typically needs emptying every 3 to 4 days for two users. Map the CDPs along your route using the apps and resources mentioned above. In remote areas — parts of Scotland, rural Wales, the Lake District — CDPs may be further apart, so empty when you have the opportunity rather than waiting until the tank is full.

How to Find Chemical Disposal Points Near You

If you're searching for a “chemical toilet disposal point near me” on the road, several free resources map CDPs across the UK:

  • Caravan and Motorhome Club site finder — lists every CAMC site and main service area with facilities including CDPs.
  • Camping and Caravanning Club site finder — same for their network.
  • Park4Night — the most comprehensive crowd-sourced app for motorhome stops, with thousands of UK CDP locations marked by other users.
  • Campercontact — European app with strong UK coverage of motorhome service points.
  • SearchFHS — UK farm and small-site database, useful for off-the-beaten-track CDPs.
  • Brit Stops — pub and small-business overnight stops, many of which now include waste disposal facilities.

Most modern motorhome SatNavs (Garmin Camper, Snooper Ventura, TomTom Camper) also have CDP location databases built in.

Regional Notes — UK Disposal Coverage

England

The strongest CDP coverage by far. Almost every Caravan and Motorhome Club, Camping and Caravanning Club, and major commercial site has a CDP. Motorhome service points are now common at major fuel stations in the South and Midlands.

Wales

Good coverage along the popular touring routes (Pembrokeshire, Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons), but sparser in mid-Wales. Plan disposal stops in advance if heading to the more remote areas.

Scotland

Coverage thins out significantly above Inverness and in the Highlands. The NC500 route now has dedicated motorhome service points at several locations, but they fill up in summer. Always empty before heading into remote areas.

Northern Ireland

CDPs are concentrated at the main commercial sites. Coverage outside of these is limited, so plan around site stops rather than expecting independent service points.

What If There's No CDP Nearby?

If you genuinely can't reach a CDP and your tank is full:

  • Call ahead to your next campsite — most will let you empty on arrival.
  • Petrol stations and pub car parks with motorhome facilities will often allow it for paying customers. Always ask first.
  • Never empty into a layby, hedge, beach or watercourse. Beyond being illegal, it carries a fine of up to £20,000 under the Environmental Protection Act.

Pre-pour concentrated toilet chemicals like Thetford Aqua Kem or Solbio organic fluid before each trip to keep odours down and break the waste down faster. Browse our toilet chemicals and hygiene range for current stock.

Wild Camping Considerations

If you wild-camp or use informal overnight stops, you will not have an on-site CDP. Carry the sealed waste tank until you reach the next available disposal point. The sealed design of modern Thetford, Dometic and Blue Diamond waste tanks means they can be transported in your vehicle boot without leakage, provided the spout cap and blade valve are securely closed.

Moving into summer 2026, having a clear plan for waste disposal makes portable toilet ownership completely hassle-free. Find toilets, chemicals and all the accessories you need at UK Camping and Leisure.
