Motorhome-ing ideas for UK Christmas campers

Most people, at Christmas time, look forward to their turkey, presents under the tree, or time spent with their family.  Some sit in glittery rooms with their tree lights on and watch cheesy Christmas films like Die Hard or Gremlins.  These are all great traditions.

There are a lot of other people though that like to get away and enjoy Santa-time under the Christmas sun of another town, city, or county.  It might not appeal to everyone to wake up in a sleeping bag at a snow-covered campsite and cook their Christmas breakfast in the cold air on a portable stove.  But that shouldn’t stop you from getting away.  Especially if you have a motorhome.

Here are some great ideas for those of you who want to celebrate Christmas in their camper van or motor home.

Visit Snowdonia

There’s no better escape than Snowdonia.  It is great if you’re going as a couple to escape the invasion of “in-laws”, or just as a quiet escape.  It is also versatile enough to hold the interest of children, so you could plan a family Christmas holiday for everyone.

Snowdonia is a mountainous region and a national park.  It’s perfect for wrapping up warm and taking a walk; and is surrounded by heritage sites showcasing the areas beautiful history.

Snowdonia, in a motorhome, will keep you feeling festive even though you’re not at home watching Elf.

Isle of Wight in a motorhome

It might sound strange to actually leave the mainland in your Motorhome, but Isle of Wight is a gorgeous place around Christmas.  It is littered with Christmas fairs and crisp wintery air.

There are still beaches and plenty of pubs that are open, but over Christmas you can have a nice balance of busy markets and isolated patches where you can enjoy the night sky in one of the few places where there is no light pollution.  You might even see Santa as you watch the skies.

Edinburgh Market

Christmas in Edinburgh

If there is one city in the whole of the UK that knows how to have a good time, it’s the Scots of Edinburgh.  Scotland’s capital is world-renowned for its architecture, and the entertainment in the city itself could give almost anywhere else in the world a run for its money.

You could make it a double whammy and stay up North for Hogmanay.  The Scottish notoriously enjoy a vibrant and entertaining New Year.  It is fair to say that you won’t go there for a tan or sit in your sunnies at a swim up bar, but Edinburgh rates highly as one of the UK’s great holiday vacations at any time of the year.

Why not visit “Constable Country”?

The painter, Constable, painted much of East Anglia, and his works are canonised as national treasures here in the UK.  The paintings supposedly capture an idyllic vision of yesteryear, celebrating a bygone age.  That said, it is not as “bygone” as one might imagine.

In Essex and Suffolk there are a lot of beautiful villages, many speckled with small cottages crowned in thatch.  Even the watering holes of this quaint and rural area are old, still with log fires roaring throughout the winter.  Imagine yourself sitting down for a Christmas dinner near the heat of an open fire.
