Capable Stoves That Won't Break the Bank
You do not need to spend £80+ to get a reliable camping stove. The sub-£30 market includes genuinely good options from established brands that will boil water, cook meals and last multiple seasons. If summer 2026 is nudging you into camping for the first time — or you need a cheap backup stove — here are the best options that respect a tight budget.
Go System Fly — Under £15
At barely more than the price of two coffees, the Go System Fly is absurdly good value. It weighs 73g, screws onto EN417 canisters and delivers a workable flame for boiling water and heating simple meals. There is no piezo ignition and the pan supports are basic, but it is functional, portable and costs less than the gas canister you'll attach it to. For Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, festival weekends and emergency backup duty, it is hard to argue against.
Campingaz Camp Bistro 3 — Around £25
The Camp Bistro 3 is the benchmark budget stove. It has piezo ignition, a 2,200W burner, a recessed design that resists wind, and it runs on CP250 cartridges available in every supermarket. Build quality is solid rather than premium, but it works reliably trip after trip. Most UK campers own one of these or have owned one at some point. At around £25, it is the best-value complete stove on the market.
Go System Dynasty II — Around £20
A step up from the Fly, the Dynasty II offers a broader pan support, piezo ignition and slightly higher output. It uses CP250 cartridges, making fuel easy to source. The plastic carry case adds a touch of convenience for packing. It lacks the Campingaz Camp Bistro's wind-resistant recess, but for sheltered cooking it performs well.
Go System Rapid — Around £18
The Rapid uses EN417 screw-thread canisters and offers a more stable three-prong pan support than the Fly. It is a good middle ground between the bare-bones Fly and a more featured stove. Piezo ignition is not included, so pack a lighter.
What You Give Up at This Price
Budget stoves are honest tools — they heat things. What they typically lack compared to premium models:
-
Simmer control: Low-flame regulation is basic. You can turn the flame down, but fine-tuning is limited.
-
Wind resistance: Most budget stoves have no built-in windshield. Budget an extra £5-8 for a folding aluminium screen.
-
Build refinement: Pan supports may wobble slightly. Ignition may be less consistent over time. Drip trays are usually absent.
-
Pack size: Budget stoves rarely fold as compactly as their premium equivalents.
False Economies to Avoid
Unbranded stoves from marketplace sellers at under £10 are a genuine risk. Poor gas connections, weak pan supports and non-standard canister fittings are common. Stick to recognised brands — Go System, Campingaz, Coleman — even at the budget end. The price difference is negligible and the safety difference is significant.
