Two Giants of Camping Cooking — Head to Head
Walk into any UK outdoor shop and you will find Coleman and Campingaz stoves sitting side by side on the shelf. Both brands have decades of heritage, loyal followings and comprehensive product ranges. But they take genuinely different approaches to camp cooking, and understanding those differences helps you make a smarter purchase before summer 2026.
Brand Heritage and Market Position
Campingaz is a French brand with roots going back to 1949. Their blue gas canisters are iconic across Europe, and their stove designs lean toward simplicity, reliability and affordability. Coleman, the American outdoor giant founded in 1900, brings more technology-forward features like InstaStart ignition, PerfectFlow pressure regulation and WindBlock shielding. Coleman products tend to sit slightly higher on the price ladder.
Gas Systems: A Key Difference
Campingaz uses its own proprietary canister system — the CP250 piercing cartridge for compact stoves and the CV300/CV470 valve canisters for larger models. These are widely stocked in UK supermarkets and petrol stations during camping season, which is a genuine advantage. Coleman stoves typically use EN417 screw-thread canisters or their own C500 cartridges, which are also readily available but less ubiquitous than Campingaz blue canisters.
This matters because once you commit to a brand's stove, you are largely committed to their fuel ecosystem. Choose based on what you can reliably source near your usual campsites.
Build Quality and Durability
Both brands build stoves that last. Campingaz stoves tend to use pressed steel construction with enamel coatings — functional, easy to clean, but not especially refined. Coleman often incorporates more aluminium, better hinge mechanisms and more robust latches. In our experience, Coleman stoves feel slightly more premium in hand, but Campingaz stoves are lighter and more straightforward to maintain.
Performance Comparison
-
Boil time (1L water): Coleman Eventemp — 4 min 10 sec; Campingaz Camping Kitchen 2 — 4 min 45 sec
-
Simmer control: Coleman's pressure regulation gives a slight edge in low-flame consistency
-
Wind resistance: Campingaz integrated windshields work well; Coleman's WindBlock system is effective but adds bulk
-
Ignition: Both offer piezo/InstaStart; reliability is comparable after 12+ months of use
Price and Value
Campingaz generally wins on upfront cost. The Camp Bistro 3 is one of the cheapest reliable stoves on the market, and Campingaz gas cartridges are competitively priced. Coleman stoves cost more but often include features like carry cases, better pan supports and superior flame control. For casual weekend campers, Campingaz offers unbeatable value. For frequent campers who cook elaborate meals, Coleman's refinements justify the premium.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Campingaz if you want simplicity, low cost, and easy fuel availability across Europe. Choose Coleman if you value precise flame control, premium build quality and don't mind paying a bit more. Both brands are available in our camping stove range. And whichever you pick, make sure you have the right cookware and fuel to go with it.
