Fifty Years of Reliable Cooking in Any Weather
The Trangia storm cooker has been made in Sweden since 1951 and the fundamental design has barely changed. That is not because Trangia lacks innovation — it is because the original concept is so effective that improvement is unnecessary. If you are planning summer 2026 hiking trips and want a stove that works reliably regardless of wind, rain or altitude, the Trangia deserves serious consideration.
How the Trangia System Works
A Trangia set consists of a lower windshield (which holds the burner), an upper windshield/pot stand, two saucepans, a frying pan and the burner itself. Everything nests together into a compact cylinder held shut by a strap. The burner sits inside the lower windshield, which has precisely sized air holes that allow enough oxygen for combustion while blocking wind from all directions. The upper ring supports the pan and channels heat upward with minimal waste.
The result is a stove that maintains nearly full performance in conditions that would extinguish an open-flame gas burner. In side-by-side tests on exposed hillsides, a Trangia will finish boiling water while a conventional stove is still struggling to maintain a flame.
Choosing Your Trangia Size
-
Trangia 25 (large): Two 1.75L saucepans, 22cm frying pan. Designed for 3–4 people. Total weight around 1.1kg with spirit burner. This is the classic family and group size.
-
Trangia 27 (small): Two 1L saucepans, 18cm frying pan. Designed for 1–2 people. Total weight around 825g. Better for solo hikers and couples.
-
Trangia Mini: A stripped-back single-pot setup for ultralight hikers. Around 330g without fuel.
Spirit Burner vs Gas Burner Insert
The traditional Trangia spirit burner runs on methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). It is silent, has no moving parts, cannot break in any meaningful way and fuel is available at any hardware shop. The downsides are slower boil times compared to gas (around 8–10 minutes for 1 litre) and less precise flame control — you adjust by partially closing the simmer ring rather than turning a valve.
Trangia also offers a gas burner insert that replaces the spirit burner and connects to an EN417 screw-thread canister via a hose. This gives you gas-stove speed and control within the Trangia windshield system. It adds weight but dramatically reduces boil times. Many experienced Trangia users own both burners and swap depending on the trip.
Cooking on a Trangia
The Trangia is not just for boiling water. The frying pan handles eggs, bacon and pancakes well, and the saucepans are suitable for pasta, rice, stews and sauces. The non-stick versions (Trangia 25-5 and 27-5 UL) make cooking and cleaning significantly easier. Pair with a Trangia kettle (which nests inside the set) for tea and coffee alongside your meal.
Care and Maintenance
Trangia sets are made from hard-anodised aluminium, which is lightweight and durable but scratches if you use metal utensils. Stick to wooden or silicone spatulas. Clean the spirit burner occasionally by burning off residue at full flame. The rubber O-ring on the screw cap should be checked annually and replaced if cracked. Beyond that, Trangias require almost no maintenance — many campers are still using sets they bought in the 1990s.
