5 things you didn’t know about camping

On the face of it, camping is simple.  Grab a tent, find a place to pitch it, cook, eat, and sleep.  For those who have never been camping before, and for some veterans, there really isn’t a lot to it.

So what can we tell the people who already know everything there is to know about camping in the UK?

Tell us how many of these camping facts you already knew.

Hello Camper

Glamping is more eco-friendly than camping

You would think that pitching a tent and going au naturale in the wilderness would be as eco-friendly as it gets.  There’s little to no energy being used, and your carbon footprint is minimal unless you are driving there in a van with poor fuel economy.

However, glamping is friendlier to the environment.  Often, glampers enjoy self-sufficient energy sources such as solar panels, and the domiciles are made using bio-degradable and eco-friendly materials.  Also, the carbon footprint is very low.  Tents, on the other hand are made of non-degradable materials with little to no sustainable attributes.

Camping is one of the most natural ways to reset your body clock

What makes the great outdoors so great is that there’s no deadlines, hustle, bustle, or snooze buttons.  You might not be getting the sleep you need in the week before you are up, showering, and heading out to a cramped commute.  When you’re camping, your body clock starts to reset.

A world without any alarms set allows you to sleep and get into a natural rhythm.  Light spreads across the world gently waking you up in a natural way, instead of you having to leap out of bed to smash that alarm clock.  If you want to reset your body clock, get your tent and have some you time.

Dame Helen Mirren Camping

Dame Helen Mirren is a member of The Caravan Club

It doesn’t matter how high-profile you are, camping is great for everyone.  You would think that Dame Mirren would be jetting between swanky hotels, with large open foyers, a stiff-backed waiters in bow ties.  In fact, she is rather partial to a caravan holiday.

She has even been known to say she loves camping as a way to escape the hustle and the bustle of the city.  Here at UK Camping, we fully support her life choices.

You shouldn’t sleep with your head in the sleeping bag

Are you the sort of person who likes to burrito themselves up, and pull the hood over their head?  Well actually you shouldn’t do this.  You should sleep with your head outside of the sleeping bag.

When you’re asleep, snoring away in dreamland, you exhale a lot and create condensation.  Of course, add to that the heat your sleeping bag generates, you will be toasty when you fall asleep.  Of course, when you wake up, your pyjamas will be damp and you will be sweating which will make the early morning chills feel much worse.

Torchlight Camping

The most popular camping gear purchase is a torch

When you think of camping, what would be your first purchase?  Tent, perhaps?  A sleeping bag surely must rank high on your list.  How many items would you list before you thought “actually I would like to see in the dark”?

Torches are the most common item bought by people for when they go camping.  I suppose it makes sense, if there is a late night need to relieve yourself, or an early morning traipse to the communal showers, you might need a torch.  Especially if you’re going barefoot and there are animals around.
