Great books to read for camping aficionados

Camping can be about exploration, and it can be about just getting away and switching off.  It’s easy to see why it can be addictive for people who have busy lives, or those who lust for adventure.  We know how you feel.

Are you the sort of person who is always either camping, planning your next camping trip, or thinking about camping?  If so, here are some books that are worth adding to your collection to help you continue that daydream.

So here are 6 great reads for camping aficionados.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring – J.R.R. Tolkein

When you’re thinking of roaming the wilds of the UK, there is nothing more nostalgic than the adventures of Frodo Baggins and his fellowship.  Travelling through Woody End, The Ford of Bruinen, and Lothlorien will make you want to enjoy the wilds.

Touching the void – Joe Simpson

This book might not have you running out for climbing gear when you next go camping, but there is a definite cautionary tale here.  The story describes true events when Simpson’s climbing partner was forced to cut his rope.  The tale of guilt, mourning, strength, friendship, and courage is a firm favourite for those people who have a hankering for the outdoors.

The girl who loved Tom Gordon – Stephen King

Stephen King can be one of those marmite authors.  Despite his versatility, many people shy away from his “master of horror” mantle.  The girl who loved Tom Gordon, however, is a departure from his usual style.  Part fairy tale, and part thriller that depicts a girl lost on the Appalachian trails.  This will connect you to your primal self, right before you go to sleep in the woods.

Camp So and So – Mary McCoy

If escapism and camping are the order of the day, then this easy read from Mary McCoy will suit you just nicely.  This is the sort of formulaic teenage fantasy that made Harry Potter famous.  25 girls go to a strange camp and are separated into five groups.  Then the danger starts.  Thrilling read.

The knife of never letting go – Patrick Ness

How about exploring a new world?  Patrick Ness puts us on a planet with two moons where men can’t conceal their thoughts.  Everyone gets to hear what is on a man’s mind.  Todd’s trek across the new world littered with dangers, and creatures called The Spackle, will make you crave exploration and discovery for yourself.  It’s an addictive read, and by the time you’re finished you will be ready for your own out-of-this-world adventure.

Deliverance – James Dickey

The film, starring Burt Reynolds and John Voight gained notoriety in its time for its content.  This is not for the faint heart, or anyone who is just thinking about camping for the first time.  The story is harrowing, graphic, and brilliant.  Follow this ill-fated adventure down a fictional river in Northwest Georgia.
