A camping gazebo is a significant investment β even a budget model represents money you would rather not waste. The single biggest factor determining how many seasons your gazebo lasts is not how much you use it but how you care for it between uses. As summer 2026 gets underway, make sure your storage routine is right.
Cleaning Your Gazebo
After Every Trip
At a minimum, shake off loose dirt, grass and leaves before packing down. If the canopy has mud, bird droppings or food splashes, wipe them off with a damp cloth while the gazebo is still pitched. This takes two minutes and prevents stains from setting.
Deep Clean (Once or Twice a Season)
- Pitch the gazebo in a garden or driveway on a dry day.
- Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild, non-detergent soap. Do not use washing-up liquid β it can strip waterproof coatings.
- Use a soft sponge or cloth to wash the canopy and side panels. Pay extra attention to seams and areas where dirt accumulates.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water using a hose on a gentle setting. High-pressure washers can damage the fabric coating.
- Wipe down the frame poles and joints with a damp cloth. Check for rust spots on steel frames and treat them with a light oil.
Drying β The Most Important Step
Mould and mildew are the number one killers of camping gazebos. They attack damp fabric in storage, creating permanent stains, weakening the material and destroying waterproof coatings.
-
Always dry your gazebo completely before storing it. This is not negotiable.
- Leave it pitched in the sun and breeze for several hours after cleaning or after a wet camping trip.
- If you cannot pitch it, drape the canopy over a clothesline or fence. Ensure all layers are separated so air reaches every surface.
- Check the underside of the canopy and the inside of any rolled sections β moisture hides in folds.
- In the UK, where rain often falls on the last day of a trip, pack the wet gazebo separately and pitch it to dry as soon as you get home. Do not leave it in the bag for days.
Storing Your Gazebo
Where to Store
A cool, dry, dark location is ideal. A garage shelf, garden shed or under-bed storage box all work well. Avoid attics (too hot in summer, which degrades UV coatings) and outbuildings with damp floors.
How to Store
- Roll the canopy loosely rather than folding it along the same creases every time. Repeated sharp folds crack the waterproof PU layer.
- Do not compress it more than necessary. If your Coleman, Kampa or Outdoor Revolution gazebo came in a tight bag, consider using a larger cotton or breathable storage sack for long-term off-season storage.
- Store poles separately if possible. Steel frames can press into fabric and cause wear points.
- Drop a few silica gel sachets into the bag to absorb residual moisture.
Pre-Season Check
Before your first trip of the year, pitch the gazebo at home and inspect it:
- Check the canopy for mould spots, tears or worn patches.
- Test the waterproofing by pouring water on the surface.
- Examine all pole joints, sliders and locking mechanisms.
- Ensure guy ropes and pegs are present and in good condition.
