Rain in Britain is not a question of "if" but "when". Even the best camping gazebo will eventually need its waterproofing refreshed, especially after a few seasons of UV exposure, folding and general wear. With summer 2026 on the horizon, now is the time to get your gazebo rain-ready before the first trip.
How Waterproofing Works on Gazebos
Most camping gazebos use polyester or polyethylene fabric with a factory-applied waterproof coating — usually polyurethane (PU) on the inner face or a silicone treatment on the outer face. This coating gives the fabric its hydrostatic head (HH) rating. A new Coleman Event Shelter Pro, for example, ships with an HH of around 3,000 mm. Over time, UV light and mechanical wear degrade this coating, and water begins to seep through.
Signs Your Gazebo Needs Re-Waterproofing
- Water no longer beads on the surface — it soaks in and darkens the fabric.
- You notice damp patches on the underside during rain, even without visible holes.
- The fabric feels less "waxy" or smooth than when it was new.
- Seam tape is peeling or lifting at the edges.
Step-by-Step Re-Waterproofing
1. Clean the Canopy Thoroughly
Waterproofing sprays will not bond to a dirty surface. Pitch the gazebo on a dry day, then sponge the canopy with lukewarm water and a mild, non-detergent soap. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals — they will strip what remains of the original coating. Rinse well and let it dry completely.
2. Repair Any Damage First
Patch small holes or tears with a self-adhesive repair patch before waterproofing. Seal lifted seam tape with seam sealant (available in tubes from most outdoor retailers). There is no point waterproofing fabric that has holes in it.
3. Apply a Spray-On Waterproofer
Use a product designed for synthetic tent and gazebo fabrics — Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof or Fabsil are popular UK options. Spray evenly across the outer face of the canopy, working in sections and overlapping each pass. Pay extra attention to seams and areas that pool water.
4. Let It Cure
Most spray treatments need 24 hours to cure fully. Leave the gazebo pitched (or draped over a clothesline) in a dry, ventilated space. Do not fold it until the coating has hardened, or surfaces will stick together.
5. Test It
Once cured, pour a cup of water over the treated area. It should bead up and roll off. If it still soaks in, apply a second coat.
Maintaining Waterproofing Long Term
-
Always dry before storing — Mould destroys waterproof coatings faster than anything else.
-
Avoid tight folding — Creasing the same lines repeatedly cracks the PU layer. Roll loosely where possible.
-
Store out of direct sunlight — UV is the enemy. A cool, dry garage or shed is ideal.
-
Re-treat annually — A quick spray at the start of each season keeps performance high.
Which Gazebos Have the Best Factory Waterproofing?
Premium models from Kampa, Outdoor Revolution and the Coleman Pro and Deluxe lines come with high HH ratings and taped seams as standard. Budget options from Bo-Camp and Leisurewize are decent out of the box but benefit from an early re-treatment if you plan to use them in heavy rain.
