We rightly worry about rain when camping in the UK, but sun protection deserves equal attention. Sunburn can happen through cloud cover, and prolonged UV exposure causes long-term skin damage. Your gazebo is your first line of defence — but only if its canopy actually blocks UV radiation. Here is what you need to know about UPF ratings as summer 2026 heats up.
What Is UPF?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It measures how much UV radiation a fabric allows through. A UPF 50+ fabric blocks at least 98% of UV rays. A UPF 15 fabric blocks around 93%. The higher the number, the better the protection.
-
UPF 15–24 — Good protection.
-
UPF 25–39 — Very good protection.
-
UPF 40–50+ — Excellent protection. This is the level you want for a camping gazebo.
Why UPF Matters for Gazebos
A gazebo provides shade, but shade alone does not guarantee UV protection. A thin, loosely woven canopy can let significant UV through even though it blocks visible sunlight. You feel cooler underneath but are still accumulating UV exposure. This is especially dangerous for children who spend hours playing under the shelter.
Factors That Affect a Canopy's UPF
-
Fabric density — Tighter weaves block more UV. Ripstop polyester with a high thread count performs well.
-
Fabric thickness — Thicker is better. Premium canopies from Coleman (marketed as "UV-Guard") and Kampa use heavier fabrics that naturally block more radiation.
-
Colour — Darker colours generally absorb more UV than lighter colours, though modern fabric treatments can give light-coloured canopies excellent UPF regardless.
-
Coating — Many gazebo canopies have a reflective silver coating on the underside that bounces UV back. This is one of the most effective approaches.
-
Age and wear — UV protection degrades over time as the fabric stretches, thins and its coating breaks down. A five-year-old canopy may have significantly lower UPF than when new.
Which Brands Prioritise UV Protection?
Coleman
Coleman's UV-Guard technology is a headline feature of their Event Shelter range. Their canopies carry a UPF 50+ rating when new, and the silver-coated underside is clearly visible. Coleman prominently states UV ratings on their product specifications.
Kampa
Kampa uses densely woven polyester with PU coatings that provide both waterproofing and UV blocking. Their larger shelters offer UPF 50+ as standard. Check the specific model's data sheet for exact figures.
Outdoor Revolution
Outdoor Revolution shelters with solid canopy panels offer strong UV blocking. Their mesh-walled screenhouses, however, allow more UV through the mesh sections — worth noting if sun protection is your primary concern.
Bo-Camp and Leisurewize
Budget brands Bo-Camp and Leisurewize provide UV protection but often do not publish specific UPF ratings. The canopies are thinner, so the UPF may be lower than premium alternatives. If UV is a priority, check product details carefully or contact the manufacturer.
Maximising Sun Protection Under Your Gazebo
- Choose a gazebo with a stated UPF 50+ rating.
- Add solid side panels on the sun-facing side to block angled rays.
- Position the shelter so the canopy shades the area throughout the day, not just at noon.
- Combine gazebo shade with personal sunscreen for children and anyone with sensitive skin.
- Replace the canopy when it shows signs of fabric thinning or coating degradation.
