Keep your cooling system running efficiently this summer with this quick step-by-step guide
Why It Matters
Your air conditioning unit works hard to keep you cool—but dust, pollen and debris can clog up your filters over time. This reduces airflow, weakens cooling performance, and can even lead to strange smells or system faults.
Cleaning or replacing your filters regularly keeps your AC working efficiently and extends its life—especially during summer road trips.
What You’ll Need:
-
Screwdriver (if access panels are screwed in)
-
Vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
-
Mild detergent (for washable filters)
-
Soft cloth or sponge
-
Replacement filters (if your model requires new ones)
🔧 Step-by-Step: How to Clean AC Filters
Step 1: Switch Off Power
Before doing anything, turn off the air con unit and unplug it from the mains or 12V supply.
Step 2: Locate the Filter Panel
Most caravan and campervan units (like Truma Aventa, Dometic FreshJet, etc.) have an access panel underneath the ceiling unit. Slide or unscrew it to expose the filters.
Step 3: Remove the Filters
Gently slide or pull the filters out. Take note of how they were seated—you’ll want to reinstall them the same way.
Step 4: Vacuum the Filters
Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, hair, and debris. Be gentle to avoid damaging the mesh.
Step 5: Wash (if washable)
If your filter is washable (check the manual or label), rinse it under warm water with a mild detergent. Avoid strong chemicals or hot water.
Step 6: Replace if Needed
If the filter is damaged, brittle, mouldy, or heavily clogged, it’s time to replace it. Install a new compatible filter (e.g. Truma Aventa Air Filter Set or Dometic FreshJet Replacement Filter).
Step 7: Refit the Filters
Once clean and dry (or replaced), slide the filters back in and close the panel. Secure it with screws if needed.
Step 8: Power Up and Test
Switch the unit back on and check airflow. You should notice a stronger, cleaner flow almost immediately.
