Best Camp Beds for Tall People — Extra Length and XL Options

Camp Beds for Taller Campers

Standard camp beds are designed for people up to about 5ft 10in, which leaves a lot of taller campers with their feet hanging off the end. If you are over 6ft and planning camping trips this summer, an XL or extra-length camp bed is not a luxury — it is essential for a decent night of sleep.

Standard vs XL Sizing

A standard camp bed sleeping surface is typically 185 to 190cm long. An XL camp bed extends this to 200 to 210cm, giving taller campers the room they need to stretch out fully. The width is often increased too, from the standard 65 to 70cm up to 75 to 80cm on XL models.

Best XL Camp Beds

The Outwell Posadas XL is our top recommendation for tall campers. With a 200cm sleeping surface and 75cm width, it gives six-footers genuine room to spread out. The raised frame height makes getting in and out comfortable, and the steel frame supports up to 120kg.

Vango also offer extended length versions of their Dormir range. These are lighter than the Outwell equivalent and pack down to a reasonable size despite the extra dimensions.

Things Taller Campers Need to Consider

Tent length: An XL camp bed needs a tent with at least 210cm of internal length. Measure your tent before buying — some two-person tents are not long enough for an XL bed.

Sleeping bag length: If you are buying an XL camp bed, make sure your sleeping bag is also an extended length. A standard sleeping bag on an XL bed leaves your shoulders or feet exposed.

Packed size: XL camp beds fold to 100 to 110cm rather than the standard 90cm. Check your car boot can accommodate the extra length.

Alternatives for Very Tall Campers

If you are over 6ft 4in, even XL camp beds can be tight. In this case, consider a full-size air bed — doubles are typically 190cm long which gives more room when sleeping diagonally. Some campers also use two self-inflating mats laid end to end on the ground as an alternative.
