Camp Bed Fabric Types β€” Polyester, Ripstop and Canvas Explained

Camp Bed Fabric Guide

The fabric stretched across your camp bed frame determines how comfortable and durable your bed feels. While most buyers focus on the frame, understanding fabric types helps you choose a bed that stays comfortable through many summers of camping. Here is what the different materials offer.

Polyester (Most Common)

The vast majority of modern camp beds use polyester fabric, typically rated at 300D to 600D. Higher denier numbers indicate thicker, stronger fabric. 600D polyester is the gold standard β€” it maintains tension well, resists abrasion, and dries quickly if it gets damp. Most Vango, Outwell and Coleman camp beds use polyester in this range.

Polyester is easy to clean with a damp cloth, resistant to mould, and does not absorb water. On the downside, it can feel slightly cold to the touch in cooler weather and is less breathable than natural fabrics.

Ripstop Nylon

Ripstop nylon uses a grid of reinforced threads woven into the fabric that prevents small tears from spreading. It is lighter than polyester at the same strength rating, making it popular on ultralight and backpacking camp beds. The downside is a slightly crinkly feel and less UV resistance than polyester β€” prolonged sun exposure degrades ripstop faster.

Canvas (Traditional)

Canvas camp beds evoke traditional military and scout camping. Canvas is breathable, comfortable, and incredibly strong. However, it is heavier than synthetic alternatives, takes longer to dry, and requires more careful storage to prevent mould. Modern camp beds have largely moved away from canvas, though some retro-style beds still use it.

Fabric Tension

Regardless of material, fabric tension is the most important comfort factor. A well-made camp bed has fabric that is drum-tight when the frame is opened β€” firm enough to support your weight evenly without sagging. Fabric that starts loose or becomes loose over time creates a hammock effect that strains your back.

  • Best for most campers: 600D polyester β€” durable, easy-care and widely available
  • Best for weight-saving: Ripstop nylon β€” lighter but less UV resistant
  • Best for traditionalists: Canvas β€” breathable but heavier and higher maintenance

Choose your preferred fabric in our camp beds collection. With summer 2026 approaching, a well-chosen camp bed fabric makes every camping night more comfortable.
