Common Air Bed Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

After years of helping campers choose, use and maintain their air beds, we have seen every mistake in the book. Some cost a night's sleep; others cost an entire air bed. Here are the most common camping air bed mistakes and straightforward ways to avoid them — valuable knowledge heading into summer 2026.

Mistake 1 — Not Measuring the Tent First

Buying a double air bed that is wider than your tent's sleeping area is surprisingly common. The bed either does not fit at all or presses against the tent walls, wicking moisture through the fabric and blocking doorways. Always measure your tent's inner dimensions and compare them to the bed's inflated dimensions before buying. Leave at least 10 cm clearance on each side.

Mistake 2 — Skipping the Groundsheet

Placing an air bed directly on the tent floor without any protection underneath invites punctures. Tent floors are thin, and beneath them lie stones, roots, thorns and debris. A cheap tarp, a dedicated footprint or even a folded blanket between the ground and the air bed prevents most punctures. This single habit will double the lifespan of any bed from Vango, Outwell, Coleman, Hi-Gear or Kampa.

Mistake 3 — Inflating in Warm Conditions

If you inflate your bed at 3pm when the tent is warm, the air inside is warm. As temperatures drop overnight, the air contracts and the bed softens. You wake up half-flat and blame the bed. The fix: inflate at dusk when the air temperature is closer to overnight levels, or slightly over-inflate in the evening to compensate for contraction.

Mistake 4 — Storing the Bed Damp

This is the most damaging mistake. Packing up a damp air bed, rolling it tightly and leaving it in a bag until next season creates mould that penetrates the material. The smell is permanent and the flocking starts peeling. Always dry your air bed thoroughly — every surface, including the underside — before storing. Even an hour in sunlight makes a difference.

Mistake 5 — Storing Tightly Packed Long-Term

Compressing an air bed into its stuff sack is fine for transport. For months of storage between seasons, it creates permanent creases that weaken the material. Store loosely rolled or flat with valves open in a cool, dry place.

Mistake 6 — Ignoring the Valve

Valves get dirty. Grit, sand and dust work into the seal and cause slow leaks that mimic punctures. A quick wipe of the valve mechanism before each trip prevents this. Also check that the valve cap is tight and undamaged — a loose cap lets air escape gradually.

Mistake 7 — Using the Wrong Pump

A tiny hand pump on a raised king-size air bed takes 20 minutes of hard effort. A high-pressure pump designed for bike tyres can over-pressurize and burst seams. Match your pump to your bed size. For raised doubles, use a high-volume electric or rechargeable pump. For singles, even a foot pump works quickly. Browse matched options in our pump collection.

Mistake 8 — Sleeping Without a Sheet or Cover

Sleeping directly on the air bed surface — even a flocked one — means sweat, body oils and dirt accumulate on the bed. This degrades the surface over time and makes the bed smell. A fitted sheet or even a flat sheet draped over the bed protects the surface and adds comfort. It is easier to wash a sheet than an air bed.

Mistake 9 — Over-Inflating

A drum-tight air bed might seem like maximum comfort, but it actually causes problems. Over-inflation stresses seams, makes the surface bouncy and uncomfortable, and increases the impact of temperature changes. Inflate until the surface is firm but still has a small amount of give when you press with your palm.

Mistake 10 — Giving Up Too Soon

Many campers try a cheap air bed once, sleep badly and declare that air beds are uncomfortable. The reality is that a budget I-beam single on a cold night without insulation or bedding is a poor experience. A coil-beam double from Outwell or Coleman with a fleece topper, proper bedding and a foam mat underneath is a genuinely excellent sleep experience. Do not judge the entire category by the cheapest possible version.

Quick-Fix Summary

  • Measure tent before buying.
  • Always use a groundsheet.
  • Inflate at dusk or over-inflate slightly.
  • Dry thoroughly before storage.
  • Store loosely with valves open.
  • Clean valves before each trip.
  • Match pump to bed size.
  • Use a fitted sheet.
  • Do not over-inflate.
  • Invest in a quality bed before judging the category.

Avoid these mistakes and your air bed will last longer, perform better and give you genuinely good sleep on every camping trip. Pair it with the right sleeping bag, and consider a camp bed as an alternative if you prefer a framed approach.
