Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Camp Bed
A camp bed is one of those purchases that transforms your camping experience overnight — literally. But with dozens of options ranging from budget folders to premium raised beds, knowing what to look for saves you money and guarantees better sleep. Here is our complete guide for the 2026 camping season.
Step 1: Choose Your Type
Standard folding camp beds sit 15 to 20cm off the ground. They are the lightest and most compact option, ideal for festival camping, scout trips or anyone who prioritises packability. Most fold to around 90cm long and weigh 4 to 7kg.
Raised camp beds sit 40 to 50cm high. They are easier to get in and out of, warmer due to the larger air gap, and provide useful storage space underneath. The trade-off is extra weight at 7 to 10kg and a larger packed size.
Double camp beds sleep two people on a single wide frame. These are relatively niche — most couples find two single camp beds more practical and comfortable, but doubles do exist for those who prefer shared sleeping space.
Step 2: Check the Weight Capacity
This is the number one thing people overlook. Standard camp beds typically support 100 to 120kg. If you are a heavier user or simply want extra durability, look for heavy-duty frames rated to 150kg or even 200kg. Always buy a bed rated at least 20kg above your body weight for long-term comfort and frame longevity.
Step 3: Consider the Frame Material
Steel frames are strongest and most affordable but heavier. Aluminium frames save 1 to 2kg in weight while still offering excellent rigidity. For car camping where you are not carrying the bed far, steel is perfectly fine. For longer carries from car park to pitch, aluminium is worth the premium.
Step 4: Check the Fabric
Polyester and ripstop nylon are the most common sleeping surface materials. Good camp beds have fabric that is taut when the bed is assembled — this provides firm, even support. Avoid beds where the fabric hangs loosely, as you will sag in the middle and wake up with a sore back.
Step 5: Test the Packed Size
Camp beds fold but they do not disappear. A standard single bed typically folds to 90 to 100cm by 20cm by 15cm. Check that this fits your car boot alongside the rest of your camping gear. Some beds fold in thirds rather than halves, producing a shorter but wider package.
