How to Repair a Punctured Camping Air Bed

A puncture does not have to mean the end of your camping trip — or the end of your air bed. With the right technique and a basic repair kit, you can fix most punctures in under 15 minutes and sleep on the repaired bed that same night. Here is the complete process, from finding the leak to making a repair that lasts for seasons.

Step 1 — Confirm It Is a Puncture

Before reaching for the patch kit, rule out simpler causes. Air beds from Vango, Coleman, Outwell and every other brand naturally lose a small amount of firmness overnight due to temperature changes and material stretching. If your bed is new and softens slightly over eight hours, that is normal. A puncture causes steady, continuous deflation that leaves the bed noticeably flat.

Step 2 — Find the Leak

The Soapy Water Method

Inflate the bed fully. Mix washing-up liquid with water to create a soapy solution. Using a sponge or cloth, apply the mixture to the bed surface in sections. Press gently on each section. Bubbles will appear at the puncture site. Mark the spot with a pen or a piece of tape.

The Listening Method

In a quiet environment, inflate the bed and press down on each section, holding your ear close to the surface. A hissing sound indicates escaping air. This works best for larger punctures.

The Tissue Paper Method

Hold a thin piece of tissue paper close to the inflated bed surface and move it slowly across. The tissue will flutter when it passes over a leak.

Check the Valve

Valves are a common leak point. Apply soapy water around the valve housing and seal. If bubbles appear, the valve may need tightening or replacing rather than patching.

Step 3 — Prepare the Surface

  • Deflate the bed completely so the surface is flat and workable.
  • Clean the area around the puncture with rubbing alcohol or a wet wipe. Remove all dirt, grease and moisture.
  • If the surface is flocked, you need to remove the flocking around the puncture. Use fine sandpaper (included in most repair kits from Hi-Gear and Vango) to gently sand away the flocked material in a circle slightly larger than your patch. The adhesive bonds to PVC or TPU, not to flocking.
  • Wipe away sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step 4 — Apply the Patch

  • Cut a patch from the repair kit material. It should be at least 2 cm larger than the puncture in every direction. Round the corners of the patch — square corners are more likely to peel over time.
  • Apply a thin, even layer of adhesive to both the patch and the sanded area on the bed. Most adhesives require you to wait 1–2 minutes until the glue becomes tacky before pressing the patch on.
  • Press the patch firmly onto the puncture site. Apply even pressure across the entire patch surface. Place a heavy flat object (a book, a water container) on top and leave it for the drying time specified on the adhesive — usually 8 to 12 hours.

Step 5 — Test the Repair

After the adhesive has fully cured, inflate the bed and apply soapy water over the patch. No bubbles means a successful repair. Leave the bed inflated for several hours and check for any loss of pressure.

Field Repair Tips

If you are mid-trip and cannot wait 12 hours for adhesive to cure, many modern patch kits include self-adhesive patches that bond instantly. These are not as durable as glued patches but will get you through the rest of a trip. Kampa and Outwell repair kits include both types.

When a Patch Will Not Work

  • Seam splits: If the leak is along a welded seam, patches rarely hold long-term. Seam failures usually indicate the bed is reaching end of life.
  • Large tears: Rips longer than 3 cm are difficult to patch reliably.
  • Valve damage: A cracked valve housing requires a valve replacement, not a patch. Some brands sell spare valves.

If repair is not viable, browse our camping air beds collection for a replacement. Consider a camp bed or cot as a puncture-proof alternative. Match your new bed with a sleeping bag and a reliable pump, and you are ready for whatever summer 2026 throws at you.
