Staying Warm on a Camp Bed

Camp beds are inherently warmer than sleeping on the ground thanks to the air gap beneath you, but on cold nights that air gap can work against you if you are not prepared. Whether you are camping in the chilly evenings of early spring or the surprisingly cool nights that even summer 2026 will bring, here is how to stay warm on your camp bed.

The Cold Air Problem

Air circulating beneath your camp bed can cool the fabric from underneath. Your sleeping bag insulates on top, but the compressed insulation beneath you offers minimal warmth. This is why you can feel cold on a camp bed even in a good sleeping bag — the heat loss is happening from below.

Solution 1: Self-Inflating Mat

Placing a self-inflating mat on top of your camp bed is the most effective insulation method. The foam core traps warm air and creates a barrier between you and the cold bed surface. A 5cm thick mat is ideal — thinner mats work but provide less insulation.

Solution 2: Reflective Mat

A thin reflective emergency blanket or purpose-made reflective mat placed under your sleeping bag bounces radiant heat back towards you. This is lightweight, cheap and surprisingly effective. It crinkles when you move but the warmth gain is worth it.

Solution 3: Sleeping Bag Liner

A fleece or thermal liner inside your sleeping bag can add 5 to 10 degrees of warmth to your bag rating. Silk liners add less warmth but are lighter and more comfortable in the transition seasons between cold and warm.

Solution 4: Close the Air Gap

Draping a blanket or extra sleeping bag under the camp bed surface blocks air circulation beneath you. This is a simple trick that stops cold air flowing under the sleeping surface. Some campers place a folded blanket on the ground beneath the bed for the same effect.

• Camp bed — the foundation
• Reflective mat — placed on the sleeping surface
• Self-inflating mat — on top of the reflective mat
• Sleeping bag — with thermal liner if needed
