Self-Inflating Mat vs Air Bed — Which Is Better for Camping?

Two of the most common sleep surfaces for camping are self-inflating mats and traditional air beds. Both have loyal followings, and both have genuine strengths. If you have been going back and forth trying to decide which to take on your summer 2026 trips, this side-by-side breakdown should settle things.

What Is a Self-Inflating Mat?

A self-inflating mat uses open-cell foam bonded inside an airtight shell. When you open the valve, the foam expands and pulls air into the mat. You then close the valve and top up with a few breaths if needed. Brands like Vango, Outwell and Kampa produce self-inflating mats in thicknesses from 3 cm up to 10 cm.

The foam core provides built-in insulation, which is why self-inflating mats tend to perform better in cooler weather than basic air beds. They also offer a firmer sleeping surface, which many side-sleepers prefer.

What Is a Traditional Air Bed?

A traditional camping air bed is an inflatable chamber — usually PVC or TPU — that you fill entirely with air using a pump. Coleman, Hi-Gear and Vango all make popular models. Heights range from a slim 10 cm single to a raised 40 cm double that feels like sleeping on a real mattress at home.

Air beds are generally softer and bouncier. You can adjust firmness by adding or releasing air. Higher-end models feature internal coil or I-beam structures that create a flat, stable sleeping surface rather than a rounded one.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Comfort

Air beds win on plushness — a raised double from Outwell or Coleman genuinely rivals your bed at home. Self-inflating mats feel firmer, which some campers prefer for back support. Personal preference matters more than any objective measure here.

Insulation

Self-inflating mats have a clear advantage. The foam core traps warmth far better than a chamber of air. If you camp in spring or autumn — or even early summer when UK nights still dip below 10 degrees — a self-inflating mat keeps you warmer without extra layers underneath.

Pack Size and Weight

A basic air bed without a built-in pump packs down very small because it contains no foam. A self-inflating mat will always be bulkier and heavier for the same sleeping area. For car camping this barely matters. For backpacking, the mat's weight is significant.

Setup Speed

Self-inflating mats need 5 to 15 minutes to fully expand, then a few breaths to firm up. Air beds with a battery or rechargeable pump inflate in 2 to 3 minutes. Manual pumps take longer but still beat waiting for foam to expand.

Durability

Punctures affect both equally, though self-inflating mats are slightly harder to patch because the foam can absorb adhesive unevenly. Both types last years with proper care — keep them away from sharp objects and store them loosely rolled with valves open.

Which Suits Your Camping Style?

  • Car camping families: A raised air bed offers the most home-like comfort. Pair it with sheets and a duvet and the kids will sleep as long as they do at home.
  • Backpackers and hikers: A lightweight self-inflating mat at 3–5 cm thick keeps pack weight reasonable while still providing insulation and cushioning.
  • Festival campers: A cheap single air bed inflates fast and costs little to replace if it gets damaged in a muddy field.
  • Cold-weather campers: Self-inflating mats with high R-values outperform air beds in chilly conditions unless you add a separate insulating layer beneath the air bed.

Can You Combine Both?

Yes. Some campers place a self-inflating mat on top of a raised air bed for maximum height and insulation. It is overkill for summer but excellent for late-season trips.
