Setting Up the Perfect Sleep System — Camp Bed, Sleeping Bag and Pillow

The Complete Camping Sleep System

Your camp bed is just one part of a three-piece sleep system that determines how well you rest on a camping trip. Getting all three elements right — bed, bag and pillow — creates a setup that genuinely rivals sleeping at home. With the summer 2026 camping season fast approaching, here is how to build the perfect combination.

Element 1: The Camp Bed

Start with a camp bed that suits your camping style. For car camping families, a raised model from Outwell or Vango provides the best comfort and ease of use. For festival-goers and lightweight campers, a standard folding bed from Quest or Vango keeps weight and cost down. A self-inflating mat on top adds cushioning and insulation regardless of which bed you choose.

Element 2: The Sleeping Bag

Your sleeping bag handles warmth. For summer camping in the UK, a bag rated to around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius covers most nights. Rectangular bags give you room to move on a camp bed, while mummy bags are warmer but more restrictive. On hot summer nights, unzip the bag and use it as a blanket.

Element 3: The Pillow

Do not skip the pillow. Proper neck support prevents the stiffness and headaches that ruin your first morning at camp. Inflatable pillows pack smallest, compressible pillows offer the most home-like comfort, and memory foam options sit between the two.

Putting It All Together

  1. Set up the camp bed on level ground inside your tent
  2. Place a self-inflating mat on the sleeping surface
  3. Lay your sleeping bag on top, opened flat in warm weather
  4. Position your pillow at the head end
  5. Keep a torch and water within arm reach

Seasonal Adjustments

Warm summer nights: Sleeping bag liner only, or sleeping bag unzipped as a cover. Light pillow.

Cool evenings: Full sleeping bag plus liner for extra warmth. Add a thermal mat under the sleeping bag.

Cold nights: Thermal sleeping bag, fleece liner, reflective mat, and possibly a blanket underneath the sleeping bag for bottom insulation.
