What's the difference between passive cool boxes and electric cool boxes?

Passive cool boxes rely on insulation and ice packs to maintain temperature - they're lightweight, affordable, and need no power but have limited cooling duration. Electric cool boxes actively cool using thermoelectric or compressor technology, maintaining consistent temperatures as long as they have power. Choose passive for day trips and picnics; electric for extended camping.

How long will a passive cool box keep food cold?

Duration depends on insulation quality, ambient temperature, and how often you open the lid. A quality passive cool box with frozen ice packs can maintain safe food temperatures (below 5°C) for 24-48 hours in moderate conditions. Pre-chill the box, freeze items that can be frozen, minimise opening, and keep in shade to maximise performance.

What size cool box do I need?

As a guide: 20-30 litres suits couples for a weekend; 35-50 litres works for families or longer trips; 50+ litres for extended camping or larger groups. Consider what you'll store - bottles take more space than you'd expect. Electric cool boxes tend to have slightly less usable space than their stated capacity due to cooling mechanisms.

Can I use an electric cool box as a freezer?

Compressor cool boxes can freeze (reaching -18°C to -22°C), making them true portable fridges/freezers. Thermoelectric models can only cool to about 20-25°C below ambient temperature, so can't freeze and may struggle in very hot weather. If you need freezing capability for ice cream, frozen meals, or ice, choose a compressor model.

How do compressor cool boxes differ from thermoelectric ones?

Thermoelectric cool boxes are affordable, lightweight, and silent but less efficient - they cool to a set amount below ambient temperature and use more power. Compressor models work like a home fridge, cooling to exact temperatures regardless of outside conditions. They're more expensive but far more efficient, quieter, and can freeze. Compressor models are the better long-term investment for regular campers.

What power options are available for electric cool boxes?

Most electric cool boxes offer 12V (vehicle) and 240V (mains) connections. Some compressor models also accept solar panel input. For off-grid camping, compressor boxes are preferable due to their efficiency - they cycle on and off rather than running constantly. Consider a portable power station if you need to run a cool box without vehicle power or hookup.

Heating, cooling, or both?

If you only tour in summer, a standalone air conditioning unit makes sense. If you also use the van in spring, autumn or winter, a combi heat-and-cool unit usually works out cheaper than two separate systems and saves space. Full-time tourers often pair a gas-fired heater (for cold mornings without hookup) with a 230v air-con for hot afternoons on site.
