Wild camping strips away the conveniences of a serviced campsite β including toilet blocks and chemical disposal points. If you regularly camp off-grid on remote Scottish hillsides, along coastal paths or at dispersed moorland spots, your toilet setup needs to be self-sufficient, lightweight and environmentally responsible. Here is what works best for wild camping in 2026.
The Off-Grid Challenge
When wild camping, you cannot rely on a nearby Chemical Disposal Point. This changes the equation in two ways:
- You need to carry sealed waste with you until you reach a disposal facility, which may be days away.
- The environmental impact of your toilet setup matters more β you are camping in sensitive, often protected landscapes.
Both factors influence which type of toilet suits off-grid use.
Composting Toilets β The Off-Grid Ideal
For van lifers, overlanders and anyone with a vehicle-based setup, a composting toilet is the strongest off-grid option. It uses no water, requires no chemicals, and produces no liquid black-water waste that needs disposal at a CDP. Solids decompose in a coconut-coir medium, and liquids are diverted to a separate container that can be diluted and disposed of responsibly in remote locations.
The main brands β Nature's Head, Separett and others β produce units designed for vehicle installation. A 12V fan vents the composting chamber, keeping the interior odour-free. The compost material needs changing every few weeks to months depending on use, and the result is a dry, inoffensive substance.
Pros for Wild Camping
- No chemical waste to dispose of at a CDP
- No water consumption
- Minimal environmental impact
- Long intervals between servicing
Cons for Wild Camping
- Requires vehicle installation (vent hose, 12V connection)
- Higher upfront cost
- Not practical for tent-based wild camping due to size and ventilation requirements
Compact Chemical Toilets β Practical for Tent-Based Wild Camping
If you wild-camp from a tent, backpack or kayak, a compact chemical toilet remains the most practical option. The Thetford Porta Potti 145 is the lightest in the Porta Potti range, with a 12-litre waste tank that is manageable to carry when sealed.
Blue Diamond's Standard portable toilet is even lighter and cheaper, making it a reasonable choice for occasional off-grid use where you accept the need to carry waste out.
Managing Waste Without a CDP
- The sealed waste tank on any quality portable toilet β Thetford, Dometic or Blue Diamond β is leak-proof when the spout cap and blade valve are closed. It can be transported safely in a vehicle boot.
- Plan your route to pass a campsite, service station or public facility with a CDP on your way home or at regular intervals.
- Use eco-friendly chemicals (Thetford Aqua Kem Green or Natural) to minimise the environmental impact of the chemicals within the sealed tank.
Dry Bag and Liner Systems
For ultra-lightweight wild camping where every gram counts, bag-and-liner toilet systems offer the simplest possible sanitation. These are essentially a folding frame with a seat that holds a lined bag. After use, add absorbent granules or powder, seal the bag and pack it out with your rubbish.
They are not as comfortable or hygienic as a flushing chemical toilet, but they weigh under a kilogram and take up almost no space. For high-mountain camping, multi-day hikes and kayak touring, they fill a genuine niche.
Leave No Trace Principles
Wild camping in the UK β particularly in Scotland, where it is a legal right under the Land Reform Act β comes with a responsibility to leave no trace:
- Never bury or leave chemical toilet waste in the wild. Always carry it to a proper disposal point.
- If using a cat-hole method (digging a hole for human waste without a chemical toilet), dig at least 15cm deep and at least 50 metres from any water source. Cover and disguise the hole afterwards.
- Pack out all toilet paper and hygiene products β do not bury them.
- Use biodegradable, eco-friendly products wherever possible.
