Camping Toilet Maintenance Guide — Keeping It Fresh All Season Long

A well-maintained portable camping toilet performs better, lasts longer and stays more hygienic than one that is neglected between trips. The good news is that maintenance is straightforward and takes very little time. Follow this season-long guide and your Thetford, Dometic or Blue Diamond toilet will serve you reliably through every trip in summer 2026 and well beyond.

Before the First Trip of the Season

Inspect the Seals

The blade-valve seal is the most important component to check. Open and close the blade valve several times, feeling for smooth movement. If the seal feels stiff, rough or shows visible cracking, replace it. If it is in good condition, apply a generous coat of silicone seal lubricant — Thetford Toilet Seal Lubricant is the purpose-made product — to keep it supple throughout the season.

Also check the seal between the top and bottom sections where the two halves latch together. Wipe it clean and ensure it sits flush without gaps.

Test the Flush

Fill the flush-water tank with clean water and operate the flush mechanism — bellows or piston — several times. Check for consistent water delivery and ensure there are no leaks from the pump, tank or connections. On a Porta Potti 565 with electric flush, check the battery contacts and replace the batteries if they are low.

Clean the Interior

Even if the toilet was cleaned before storage, give the bowl, seat and tank interiors a rinse with clean water. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, which scratch the plastic and create surfaces that harbour bacteria.

During the Camping Season

After Every Trip

  1. Empty the waste tank at a Chemical Disposal Point.
  2. Rinse the waste tank with clean water — pour in a litre, swirl and pour out. Repeat once.
  3. Empty the flush-water tank or leave a small amount of water with a capful of rinse fluid if you are camping again soon.
  4. Wipe the bowl, seat and exterior with antibacterial wipes or a damp cloth.
  5. Leave both sections separated with caps open to air-dry before storing.

Monthly Seal Check

If you camp frequently — every weekend or more — check the blade-valve seal monthly. Run your finger along it to feel for roughness or drying. A quick application of lubricant takes seconds and prevents the seal degrading to the point where it lets odour through.

Mid-Season Deep Clean

Halfway through the season, give the toilet a thorough clean:

  • Fill the waste tank with clean water and a dose of dedicated toilet cleaner (not bleach). Let it soak for an hour, then empty and rinse.
  • Clean the flush mechanism by running clean water through it several times.
  • Wipe down the entire exterior including the underside and carry handles.
  • Check the tank-level indicator (if fitted) is reading correctly by filling with a known volume of water.

End of Season Storage

Thorough Cleaning

Before putting the toilet away for winter:

  1. Empty and triple-rinse the waste tank.
  2. Empty and rinse the flush-water tank.
  3. Run clean water through the flush mechanism until it comes out clear.
  4. Clean the bowl, seat, lid, exterior and all seals with mild soap and water.
  5. Apply seal lubricant to the blade-valve seal and the section-join seal.

Drying

Leave both halves separated in a warm, dry area with all caps and valves open until completely dry. Residual moisture left in a sealed tank during storage promotes mould and unpleasant odours.

Storage Location

Store indoors if possible — a garage, shed or utility room. Avoid direct sunlight, which degrades plastic and rubber over time. If storing in an unheated space, ensure the toilet is completely dry to prevent freeze damage to any residual moisture in the pump mechanism.

Replacement Parts to Keep Handy

  • Blade-valve seal (model-specific — check Thetford or Dometic part numbers)
  • Pour-spout cap seal
  • Bellows rubber (for bellows-flush models)
  • Batteries (for electric-flush models)
