Moving Beyond Beans on Toast
There is a persistent myth that camping food must be bland, basic or prepackaged. In reality, a decent camping stove and some preparation lets you cook meals that rival your kitchen at home. With summer 2026 offering long, warm evenings at the campsite, it is worth levelling up your outdoor cooking game. Here are practical techniques and recipes that work on any camp stove from Campingaz, Coleman, Trangia or Jetboil.
Planning and Preparation
The secret to good campsite cooking is not skill β it is preparation. Do as much prep work at home as possible:
- Pre-chop vegetables and store them in sealed bags or containers
- Pre-mix spice blends so you are not carrying ten separate jars
- Pre-cook rice or pasta at home, then reheat at the campsite (saves fuel and time)
- Marinate meat in zip-lock bags the night before
- Bring a small chopping board and a sharp knife β these transform what you can achieve on site
Essential Technique: One-Pot Cooking
One-pot meals are the single most practical approach to camp cooking, especially on a single burner. Everything goes into one pan, which means less washing up, less fuel use and better flavour integration.
Recipe: Campsite Chorizo Pasta (Serves 2)
Bring a pan of water to the boil on your stove. Add 200g pasta and cook for 8 minutes. In the final two minutes, add a handful of cherry tomatoes and 100g sliced chorizo. Drain most of the water, stir in a tablespoon of olive oil, a crushed garlic clove and a handful of rocket. Season with black pepper. Total time: 12 minutes, one pan.
Recipe: Thai Green Curry (Serves 4 β Double Burner)
On burner one, cook 300g rice in a pan with a lid. On burner two, fry a tablespoon of Thai green curry paste in oil for one minute. Add a tin of coconut milk, diced chicken or tofu, sliced peppers and green beans. Simmer for 15 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Serve the curry over the rice. Pre-mix the paste and coconut milk at home in a jar for even easier campsite assembly.
Recipe: Full English on a Double Burner
The classic camping breakfast. Burner one: fry bacon and sausages in a frying pan over medium heat. Burner two: heat a can of beans in a small saucepan. Once the meat is done, push it to the side and fry eggs in the same pan. Toast bread on the edge of the frying pan or use a camp toaster on the second burner. Serve with a cuppa from your camping kettle.
Recipe: Trangia Pancakes (Serves 2)
The Trangia frying pan is perfectly sized for pancakes. Pre-mix 150g flour, one egg and 250ml milk at home in a bottle. At the campsite, shake the bottle, pour batter into the lightly oiled Trangia pan and cook on low heat for 2 minutes per side. Top with lemon juice and sugar, or Nutella and banana for a summer 2026 camping treat.
Fuel Management for Meal Cooking
- Use a lid on every pan β it traps heat and boils water 25% faster
- Match pan size to burner size β a tiny pan on a big flame wastes gas on the sides
- Start with high heat to boil, then reduce to a simmer β most cooking time should be on low
- Wind protection saves more fuel than any cooking technique β use a windshield
