Camp Bed Frame Materials β€” Steel vs Aluminium Compared

Steel vs Aluminium Camp Bed Frames

The frame is the backbone of any camp bed, and the material it is made from affects everything from weight and durability to price and feel. As you prepare your gear for the 2026 camping season, understanding this choice helps you buy the right bed the first time.

Steel Frames

Steel is the traditional choice for camp beds and still the most common material in mid-range and budget models. Advantages include exceptional strength, higher weight capacity ratings, and lower cost. A steel-frame camp bed from Quest or Crusader costs significantly less than an equivalent aluminium model.

The main drawback is weight. A steel-frame camp bed typically weighs 7 to 10kg compared to 4 to 6kg for aluminium. For car camping where you park next to your pitch, this barely matters. For any carry beyond 50 metres, it becomes noticeable.

Steel frames can also rust if the protective coating is damaged. Drying your camp bed thoroughly before storage and checking for paint chips helps prevent corrosion.

Aluminium Frames

Aluminium alloy frames are lighter, corrosion-resistant, and increasingly common in mid-range to premium camp beds from brands like Vango and Outwell. A quality aluminium camp bed saves 2 to 3kg over steel, which makes a real difference when carrying kit across a campsite.

Modern 7000-series aluminium alloy is remarkably strong β€” most aluminium camp beds are rated to 100 to 130kg, which covers the majority of users. The material does not corrode, so aluminium beds tolerate damp storage conditions better than steel.

The trade-off is price. Aluminium camp beds cost 20 to 30 percent more than comparable steel models. For the weight saving and corrosion resistance, many campers consider this a worthwhile premium.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose steel if you prioritise weight capacity, durability and value for money
  • Choose aluminium if you prioritise lightweight portability and corrosion resistance
  • For car camping: Steel is perfectly fine and saves money
  • For carry distances over 50m: Aluminium is worth the premium
