How to Keep Warm on a Camping Air Bed β€” Insulation Layers

Sleeping on top of a column of air sounds warm in theory, but anyone who has woken up shivering on a camping air bed at 2am knows the reality. Air beds lose heat fast. The good news is that a few simple insulation layers turn a cold, uncomfortable night into a warm one. Here is how to build a proper warm sleep system for your summer 2026 trips β€” and beyond.

Understanding Heat Loss on an Air Bed

Your body generates heat. A good sleeping bag traps that heat on top and around you. But underneath, your weight compresses the sleeping bag flat, eliminating its loft and its insulating ability. Meanwhile, the air inside the bed convects β€” warm air rises away from the ground, cold air sinks down, and a continuous cycle draws heat from your body through the mattress.

This is why insulation beneath you matters more than insulation on top. Even a premium sleeping bag cannot compensate for a cold surface underneath.

Layer 1 β€” Under the Air Bed

Closed-Cell Foam Mat

The simplest and cheapest insulating layer. A thin foam mat placed between the tent floor and the air bed creates a thermal break. These mats are practically indestructible, weigh very little and cost under ten pounds. They stop ground cold from reaching the bed's underside.

Reflective Emergency Blanket

A foil survival blanket laid shiny-side-up under the air bed reflects radiant heat back upward. Combined with a foam mat, this is a highly effective budget insulation strategy.

Carpet or Rug

Family campers often bring a cheap rug for the tent's living area. Extending it under the bedroom section adds insulation. An old carpet offcut works equally well.

Layer 2 β€” On Top of the Air Bed

Fleece Blanket

A fleece blanket draped over the air bed surface adds a warm layer between your sleeping bag and the cold air chamber. Fleece stays warm even when slightly damp and costs very little.

Mattress Topper

A thin memory foam or hollow-fibre mattress topper provides both insulation and extra comfort. Some camping brands sell dedicated toppers designed to fit standard air bed sizes. Check our air beds collection for compatible accessories.

Self-Inflating Mat

Placing a self-inflating mat on top of a raised air bed gives you the height benefit of the air bed with the insulation of the mat. It is a luxury combination that works brilliantly in cooler weather. Vango and Outwell both produce mats that sit well on their air bed surfaces.

Layer 3 β€” Your Sleeping Bag

Choose a sleeping bag rated for temperatures lower than you expect to encounter. If you camp in the UK between April and October, a bag rated to 0 or -5 degrees gives you a comfortable margin. Bags with a shaped, mummy-style cut retain heat better than rectangular ones because there is less empty air space inside.

Layer 4 β€” Your Clothing

What you wear to bed matters. A dry set of thermal base layers β€” merino wool is the gold standard β€” retains body heat without overheating. Thick socks and a lightweight beanie prevent heat escaping from extremities. Never sleep in the clothes you wore during the day; they hold moisture that chills you overnight.

Putting It All Together

  • Ground: Tent footprint or tarp.
  • Layer 1: Closed-cell foam mat (and optionally a reflective blanket).
  • Air bed: Your chosen model β€” raised beds from Coleman or Kampa add extra air gap.
  • Layer 2: Fleece blanket or mattress topper on the bed surface.
  • Layer 3: Sleeping bag rated below your expected temperature.
  • Layer 4: Dry merino or synthetic base layers, socks, beanie.

Hot Water Bottle Trick

Place a hot water bottle inside your sleeping bag 15 minutes before bed. It pre-heats the interior and stays warm for hours. Simple, lightweight and remarkably effective. Hi-Gear sell compact camping-specific bottles that work well.

If insulation remains an issue regardless, a camp bed raises you completely off the ground and eliminates conduction entirely. A quality pump makes midnight top-ups quick if cold air causes your bed to soften. With the right layers, you can camp comfortably well beyond the summer 2026 peak season.
