Camping Air Bed Weight Guide — How Heavy Is Too Heavy?

Weight matters in camping — maybe not as much as backpackers claim, but it matters. Carrying gear from the car park to your pitch, fitting everything in the boot, and the sheer hassle of heavy equipment all factor into your camping enjoyment. So how heavy is too heavy for a camping air bed? Here is a practical weight guide for summer 2026.

Typical Air Bed Weights by Category

Basic Single Air Beds

Weight range: 0.8 – 2.0 kg. Models from Hi-Gear, Kampa and Vango's entry range sit at the lighter end. These are genuinely light — barely noticeable in a rucksack or car boot. The trade-off is thinner PVC and simpler construction.

Standard Single Air Beds (Coil)

Weight range: 2.0 – 3.5 kg. Coil construction from Outwell and Vango's Blissful range adds material inside the bed, increasing weight but improving comfort significantly. Still manageable for one person to carry comfortably.

Basic Double Air Beds

Weight range: 2.5 – 4.0 kg. A budget double from Hi-Gear or Coleman weighs roughly twice a basic single. Pack size increases proportionally. These fit easily in a car boot alongside the rest of your gear.

Standard Double Air Beds (Coil)

Weight range: 4.0 – 6.0 kg. Premium doubles from Outwell and Coleman with coil construction sit in this range. The weight difference versus a basic double is noticeable when carrying but irrelevant once at the pitch.

Raised Double Air Beds

Weight range: 5.0 – 9.5 kg. This is where weight becomes a genuine consideration. A Coleman Maxi Comfort Raised King at approximately 9 kg is a two-handed carry. Built-in pumps add 0.5–1.0 kg on top of the bed weight.

Does Weight Correlate With Quality?

Generally, yes — but not linearly. A heavier bed usually means thicker PVC, more internal structure (coils vs I-beams) and often a built-in pump. These all contribute to comfort and durability. However, some premium beds use TPU instead of PVC, which achieves the same or better durability at a lower weight. Outwell's newer TPU models demonstrate this well.

Weight vs Your Camping Style

Car Camping (Pitch Within 50 Metres of Car)

Weight is almost irrelevant. A 9 kg raised king bed is a mild inconvenience for 30 seconds of walking. Prioritise comfort and features over weight savings.

Car Camping (Pitch 100+ Metres From Car)

Multiple trips hauling heavy gear gets tiring. Keep individual items under 6 kg where possible. A standard coil double at 5 kg is fine. A raised king at 9 kg needs its own trip.

Festival Camping (Long Walk From Parking)

At festivals you often walk 500 metres or more across uneven ground carrying everything at once. A basic single at 1–2 kg is ideal. Anything over 4 kg competes with your tent, sleeping bag, and supplies for carrying capacity.

Backpacking / Wild Camping

Traditional air beds are rarely suitable. Even a basic single at 1.5 kg is heavy for a backpacker when a self-inflating mat at 500g does a similar job. If you backpack, look at our ultralight sleeping bags instead and pair with a compact mat.

Pack Size Considerations

Weight and pack size do not always correlate. A basic PVC air bed packs down much smaller than its weight suggests because it contains no foam. A self-inflating mat of the same weight takes up 3–4 times the volume. For boot-space planning, check the packed dimensions listed on product pages.

Reducing Carry Weight

  • Choose a separate pump: A bed without a built-in pump weighs less. Carry the pump separately or share one pump across the family.
  • Consider TPU: TPU beds weigh 10–20% less than PVC equivalents of the same size.
  • Use a trolley: A folding camping trolley eliminates the carry issue entirely. Load up and wheel everything to your pitch in one trip.

Our Weight Recommendations

  • Under 2 kg: Ideal for festivals, lightweight camping and backpacking-adjacent trips.
  • 2–5 kg: The sweet spot for most campers. Comfortable beds at manageable weights.
  • 5–7 kg: Premium territory. Worth it for frequent campers who prioritise comfort.
  • 7+ kg: Car-camping only. Outstanding comfort but plan your carry logistics.

If weight is a deciding factor, a camp bed offers a different trade-off — typically heavier but requires no pump or inflation effort. Browse our full air beds collection with weights listed on every product, and plan your summer 2026 gear with full confidence. Don't forget a pump to go with it.
