Extra Wide and XL Camp Beds
Standard camp beds are typically 65 to 70cm wide, which is fine for average-build adults sleeping on their back. But side sleepers, larger adults, and anyone who just likes space to move will benefit from an XL or extra-wide camp bed. As you kit out for summer 2026 camping, here are the wider options worth considering.
Width Options Available
Standard camp beds sit at 65 to 70cm. Wide models step up to 75 to 80cm, adding meaningful extra room. XL camp beds combine extra width with extra length, typically measuring 80cm by 200cm or more. For comparison, a standard single bed at home is 90cm wide, so an 80cm camp bed gets you remarkably close.
Who Benefits Most
Side sleepers: Sleeping on your side takes up more width than sleeping on your back. An extra 10cm of width prevents your elbows and knees hanging off the edge.
Restless sleepers: If you turn and shift during the night, a wider bed means you do not wake up feeling like you are about to fall off.
Larger adults: Broader shoulders and hips need more sleeping surface. A wide camp bed provides the space to sleep comfortably without restriction.
Trade-Offs to Consider
Wider camp beds are heavier and have a larger packed size. An 80cm wide bed adds roughly 1 to 2kg over a 65cm model. They also need a wider tent — measure your tent internal width before buying. In a two-person tent, an extra-wide single camp bed may not leave room for anything else.
Our Wide and XL Recommendations
The Outwell Posadas XL leads for combined width and length. Vango offer wide versions of their popular Dormir range. Coleman heavy-duty beds are naturally wider than average, with their Big Comfort model being one of the widest standard camp beds available.
