Camp Bed Storage and Care Guide
Folding a camp bed incorrectly is the fastest way to damage the frame or fabric, and storing it damp invites mould and corrosion. A few minutes of proper care after each trip means your camp bed will be ready to go when the next summer 2026 camping weekend arrives. Here is how to do it right.
Step-by-Step Folding
-
Remove all bedding — sleeping bag, mat, pillow. Do not try to fold the bed with anything on it.
-
Stand the bed upright — this makes the folding mechanism easier to operate and keeps the fabric out of the dirt.
-
Release the locking mechanism — most camp beds have a simple clip or pin that holds the frame rigid. Release this before trying to fold.
-
Fold the frame smoothly — apply even pressure from both sides. Do not force one end if the other is still locked or caught on fabric.
-
Check the fabric is not trapped — make sure the sleeping surface material is not pinched in any joints or hinges.
-
Secure the folded bed — use the carry bag or straps to keep it folded during transport.
Drying Before Storage
This is the most important step that people skip. If your camp bed got damp from condensation, dew or rain, dry it thoroughly before putting it away. Open it up in a garage, shed or garden and let air circulate around the fabric and frame. Even light dampness can cause mould on the fabric and surface rust on steel frames within weeks.
Where to Store
A dry, cool location is ideal. A garage, shed, under-bed space or wardrobe all work well. Avoid damp outbuildings and unheated spaces where temperature swings cause condensation. Store the bed in its carry bag to keep dust off and protect the fabric from UV if it is near a window.
Pre-Season Checks
Before your first trip each year, unfold the bed and check for fabric tears or loose stitching, rust spots on steel frames, bent or stiff joints, and worn locking mechanisms. Catching small issues now prevents a broken bed at the campsite.
Keep your camp bed in top condition and it will reward you with years of comfortable sleep. Browse replacement beds in our camp beds collection if your current one has seen better days.
