Choosing Cassette Toilets
Most caravan and motorhome toilets are cassette type - a fixed bowl with a removable waste cassette underneath. Tent campers and pop-tops use portable toilets that work the same way but standalone.
Cassette vs Portable
Cassette: built into the van, larger waste capacity (~20L), needs proper site emptying. Portable: standalone unit, lower capacity (~10-20L) but goes anywhere.
Chemicals
Blue chemical for the waste tank breaks down solids and controls smell. Pink/green chemical for the flush tank keeps the bowl clean and lubricates seals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I empty the cassette?
Every 2-3 days of use, or sooner when the level indicator shows full. Empty into a chemical disposal point - never into a normal toilet that drains to a septic tank.
Are the chemicals environmentally safe?
Modern formula chemicals (blue and green) are biodegradable and septic-tank safe. Always check the bottle - some older blue chemicals contain formaldehyde and are restricted in some sites.
Can I use household toilet paper?
It's better to use specialist quick-dissolve camping/RV toilet paper. It breaks down faster and avoids blockages in the cassette outlet pipe.
How do I clean the cassette?
Empty fully, rinse with fresh water, add a deep-clean tablet (we stock a few brands), shake and re-empty. Do this every 1-2 trips for a hygienic, long-lived cassette.
