Choosing the right model comes down to three things: your vehicle size, whether you want a skylight integration, and how much cooling power you actually need.

FreshJet, FreshLight or CoolAir?

FreshJet is the mainstream rooftop range — the FreshJet 1700 suits caravans up to 5.5m, the FreshJet 2200 steps up for 5.5–7m vans. The FreshLight is unique: it combines a rooftop air conditioner with a built-in skylight — ideal if you don't want to give up your existing rooflight. CoolAir is for larger A-class motorhomes and trucks where you need maximum cooling output.

Quiet operation & efficiency

CoolAir is Dometic's high-output range for larger motorhomes, trucks, and parking-cooler applications where you want strong cooling from a single unit.

Are Dometic air conditioners worth the higher price?

Yes, for most caravanners and motorhomers, Dometic justifies the price. Their rooftop units are fitted as standard by many OEMs (caravan and motorhome manufacturers), parts availability is the best in the UK leisure market, and reliability over 8-12 years is well-documented. You're paying for proven reliability, quiet operation (47-50 dB), and excellent UK service support. Budget brands save you 25-35% upfront but rarely match the 10-year lifecycle.

How long do Dometic air conditioners typically last?

With normal touring use and annual filter changes, Dometic air conditioners commonly last 10-15 years. Many original FreshJet units fitted in the late 2000s are still running today. The most common service items are the foam filter (yearly), the remote control battery, and occasional cleaning of the evaporator. Compressor failure is rare in the first decade. Parts availability for legacy models is excellent.

Can I still get replacement filters for older Dometic models?

Yes - Dometic maintains parts availability for 10+ years after a model is discontinued. Filters for older FreshJet, B1500S, B2200 and similar units are still in stock with us. If you have an older Dometic and aren't sure which filter fits, send us the part number from the data plate (usually inside the unit housing) and we'll match the correct replacement.

Do Dometic air conditioners come with a UK warranty?

All Dometic air conditioners sold by us come with a 24-month manufacturer's warranty backed by Dometic UK. The warranty covers component failure and manufacturing defects. Extended warranties are sometimes available via Dometic registration within 28 days of purchase. Coverage excludes damage from incorrect installation, which is why we recommend professional fitting if you're not confident.

Are Dometic units quieter than other rooftop air conditioners?

Dometic FreshJet 2200 measures around 47-49 dB at the indoor vent in normal mode - among the quietest rooftops on the market but typically 2-3 dB louder than the equivalent Truma Aventa Comfort. The difference is small but noticeable when sleeping with the unit running. For genuinely whisper-quiet operation, split-system units (with the compressor mounted outside) hit 38-42 dB indoors.

Which Dometic model fits my caravan or motorhome best?

Most Dometic FreshJet models fit standard 400 × 400 mm roof openings, the same as Truma and most major brands - which makes them straightforward replacements for older Truma or Dometic units already on your roof. Cooling output should match your caravan/motorhome size: FreshJet 1700 (1.7 kW) for caravans up to 5.5m, FreshJet 2200 (2.2 kW) for 5.5-7m, larger CoolAir models for 7m+ motorhomes. Can Dometic units heat as well as cool?
